FY 2007 Report on Energy Supply and Demand Released by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy

line

30 Apr. 2009 Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy released a final report on Japan’s energy supply and demand for FY 2007 based on the related statistics. The final energy consumption in Japan decreased 1.1% year on year, registering a decline for three consecutive years since 2005 owing to the improved energy efficiency in individual sectors. However, energy-originated carbon dioxide emissions increased 2.8% year on year mainly under the impact of the declined use of nuclear power plants because of the Niigata-ken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake. Highlights of the report are as follows:

Owing to the trend of the energy efficiency improvement in the manufacturing sector for six straight years, in the industry sector the energy consumption remained almost flat despite the brisk production (up 0.1% year on year).

In the residential and commercial sector, energy consumption declined 2.3% year on year due mainly to improvement in energy efficiency in the commercial sector, although it increased in the residential sector because of a hotter summer and a colder winter than in the previous year.

Energy consumption in the transportation sector declined 1.9%, showing a continuous decrease since its peak in 2001.

Contrary to these declines in energy consumption, the energy-originated CO2 emissions increased. This is primarily due to the increase in the electricity’s CO2 emission intensity mainly owing to the reduced use of nuclear power generation caused by the earthquake and the reduced use of hydro power generation caused by the 2007 drought.

Note: Please note that this report is subject to change at the time of releasing the FY 2008 Energy Supply and Demand Report, because it is based on the available final figures in primary statistics, which still include some preliminary figures and may be revised in the future.
