Consumers can obtain the “eco-points” by purchasing “green” home appliances such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, terrestrial digital broadcasting TVs (the final product list applied for this scheme is due after May 15, 2009 (the official selection is reliant to the timing of the Diet approval of the supplementary budget).
For products to be designated as “exchangeable” with the eco-points, the concept of the national labeling scheme - the “Uniform Energy Saving Labeling Program” is applied such that the product for this “Eco-points scheme” should have the rating of “four-star” approved under the above mentioned national labeling scheme. The exchangeable products may include as follows:
- Energy efficient or environmentally-friendly products;
- Exchangeable coupons and pre-paid cards that can be used anywhere in Japan.
(organizations that provide the exchangeable products under this scheme are obliged to provide some form of environmental-friendly donation);
- Products which are beneficial to the regional economy
