The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy released a preliminary report on Japan’s energy supply and demand situation for FY 2008, based on the results of a variety of energy-related statistics. The summary is as follows:

Summary

  • Final energy consumption decreased 6.8% year on year (the largest drop since FY 1965 and a 5.9% increase from FY 1990) due to a significant reduction in energy consumption in the industry sector.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions originating from energy decreased 6.7% year on year (a 7.4% increase from FY 1990) due to reduced energy consumption.
  • In the industry sector, energy consumption declined 11.0% year on year (a 10.1% decline from FY 1990) due to a 12.7% drop in production in the manufacturing and mining industries caused by an economic downturn.
  • In the residential and commercial sector, energy consumption declined 3.2% year on year (a 34.4% increase from FY 1990) as a result of a 2.8% reduction in activity in the commercial sector and a 3.3% fall in energy consumption in the household sector.
  • In the transport sector, energy consumption declined 4.0% year on year (an 8.2% increase from FY 1990) due mainly to a 3.4% fall in freight traffic volume caused by an economic downturn.
  • Although energy efficiency improved in the transport, commercial, and household sectors, energy intensity worsened in the industry sector for the first time in seven years as a result of a substantial drop in operation rate.
