National Estimate of Idling Stop Effects
  • If all the private passenger cars stop idling throughout Japan, gasoline consumption of 3,030,000 kl can be annually saved, which is equivalent to 2,750,000 kl of crude oil.
  • This reduction corresponds to 16% of the reduction target, 16,900,000 kl, of the transport field for the year of 2010.
  • In case of full automatic idling preventive car, idling can be stopped even on a narrow street, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

4.4 Idling Stop System, etc.
Concerns of Idling Stop
  • Doubt about higher fuel consumption at restarting
  • Concern about increased other exhaust gases (NOx, etc.)
  • Concern about causing traffic congestion due to delayed starting
  • Concern about stopping the engine and troublesome operation
  • Less comfort such as deactivated air-conditioner
  • Concern about durability of parts and failures of the car
Concerns of Idling Stop
  • In order to accelerate diffusion of idling preventive cars, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry enacted a "Subsidy System for Promotion of Idling Preventive Cards" in April 2003.
  • The subsidy system targets Toyota Vitz (automatic transmission car), Daihatsu Mira (manual transmission car), and so on., but has been extended to cover taxis and freight cars.
  • The expense to install an idling preventive device is subsidized by 50%.
Idling at Traffic Lights
  • Switzerland: Prohibited by the law. Course available at the time of getting a driver's license, but not very much implemented.
  • Germany: Promoted in the past. Exclusive traffic lights installed, but now, being removed.
  • Sweden: Implementation discussed, but concerned about a failure of restarting because of many old cars.
  • Britain: Idling stop at traffic lights not denied, but not positively promoted.
