Transport sector: the great oil guzzler

Transport sector is single largest user of oil and oil products – 57% per cent of total consumption (112 MMT)
Personal transport uses almost all of petrol. Road transport consumes more than 62 per cent of diesel.
ADB estimates; In India, consumption of fuels by vehicles in 2035 could be six times that of the 2005 level.

Integrated Energy Policy 2006 and Transport Sector

India’s energy Intensity can be Reduced up to 25%
Efficiency to be improved in Energy Extraction, conversion, Transportation, and consumption.
Major impacting areas includes Mass transport & vehicles etc.

Policy suggest that if the Energy efficiency of all motorized vehicles is increased by 50%, oil requirement will go down by some 86 MMT by 2031-32. ( Projected requirements are 337-462 MMT of oil).
Another, 38MMT can be increased by improving efficiency in the freight transport)
Transport sector itself can reduce oil requirement by 25% in the most oil intensive scenario.
Standards and labeling is required in Transport sector to combat in-efficiencies.
