Vehicle Fuel Consumptions

Transport sector: the great oil guzzler
  • Transport sector is single largest user of oil and oil products – 57% per cent of total consumption (112 MMT)
  • Personal transport uses almost all of petrol. Road transport consumes more than 62 per cent of diesel.
  • ADB estimates; In India, consumption of fuels by vehicles in 2035 could be six times that of the 2005 level.

Integrated Energy Policy 2006 and Transport Sector
  • India’s energy Intensity can be Reduced up to 25%
  • Efficiency to be improved in Energy Extraction, conversion, Transportation, and consumption.
  • Major impacting areas includes Mass transport & vehicles etc.
  • Policy suggest that if the Energy efficiency of all motorized vehicles is increased by 50%, oil requirement will go down by some 86 MMT by 2031-32. ( Projected requirements are 337-462 MMT of oil).
  • Another, 38MMT can be increased by improving efficiency in the freight transport)
  • Transport sector itself can reduce oil requirement by 25% in the most oil intensive scenario.
  • Standards and labeling is required in Transport sector to combat in-efficiencies.
