TQM and Sho-shudan activity

  • TQM and Kaizen by Sho-shudan activity are very popular in Japanese enterprises/factories. ( Sho-shudan activity is generally included in TQM. )

Small group activity: “kaizen by sho-shudan”
This activity is originally a free and independent activity of a small group formed of workers based on their voluntary spirits to feel being worthwhile or satisfaction.

< Organizing a group >

  • Members: 5 – 10 persons. Depending on the theme, (engineer(s) may join the group).
  • Leader : to be elected from among the members (irrespective of seniority).
< Establish a theme and the target >
  • considering the problems of their own workplace or production line.
< Study meeting > 2 – 3 times per month.
< Data collection, improvement action and evaluation >
  • Members collect data by themselves or receive data from the company (energy manager/engineer).
  • They compile and graph the data, and identify the problem and study the measures by themselves.
  • Put the measures into practice (if necessary, under the engineer’s permission), evaluate the results.
