I. - 4. Transition of Energy Consumption in the Transportation Sector
Transition of Energy Consumption
in the Transportation Sector
  • Energy consumption in the transportation sector surged after the oil crisis and leveled off in recent years.
  • Per-capita energy consumption in the transportation sector is on the increase in all major countries.

    I. - 4. Transition of Energy Consumption in the Transportation Sector
Transition of the Energy Consumption Rate
    in the Transportation Sector
  • The consumption rate in the transportation sector substantially increased for private vehicles and freight vehicles.
  • Vehicle transportation accounts for a large portion (over 80%) of the passenger and freight sectors in FY 2004, indicating that energy consumption for vehicles is greatly affecting the increase/decrease of energy consumption in the transportation sector.

    I. - 4. Transition of Energy Consumption in the Transportation Sector
    Contributing Factors that Increase Energy
    Consumption in the Transportation Sector
  • Private passenger vehicles contributed 90% of the total energy consumption increase during FY1991 to FY2004 in the whole transportation sector.
  • Private passenger vehicles have poor energy consumption intensity compared to other transportation.
  • Contributing Factors that Increase Energy Consumption in the Transportation Sector

    I. - 4. Transition of Energy Consumption in the Transportation Sector
Factors Affecting the Increase in Energy Consumption for Private Passenger Vehicles
  • The factors affecting the increase in energy consumption for private passenger vehicles, which accounts for a major portion of energy consumption in the passenger sector, include vehicle stock, driving distance and fuel economy factors.
  • Passenger vehicle stock is increasing, but annual driving distance per vehicle per year is decreasing, resulting in the same level or slight decrease in total driving distance
