The comprehensive approach in Japan to Improve Fuel Economy
  • Establish and Strengthen Fuel Economy Standards
  • Labeling: Implemented in April 2004. Fuel economy performance is ranked in four levels - the target level, the level exceeding the target level by 5%, 10% and 20%. Stickers on windows indicate the rank. Japan Achieved 23 % fuel economy in less than 10 years.
  • Lower taxes for Fuel Efficient Vehicles: Tax reduction can be in the range of 50% to 75% for a targeted period. Hybrid Vehicles get tax incentives.
  • Focussed R&D
The multi pronged strategy helps the technology to improve and improve fuel efficiency.

Trends…..
  • Japan and EU: Most stringent standards in the world
  • The US and Canada: Lowest standards in terms of fleet average fuel economy rating
  • New Chinese standards stringent except EU and Japan

The Question …
