(example) Compressor electric energy reduction in Manufacturing of precision machinery

Energy intensity = 25.6 kWh / piece (products) (--- Previous year’s result)

<Existing problems>

  • A considerable amount of energy is being wasted.
    • The discharge pressure of the factory’s compressors is too high.
    • The factory has no system for controlling the number of compressors brought into operation according to load conditions.
    • Air is leaking from piping.
    • There is no receiver tank.
  • They decided to solve this problems by TQM activities.
    <TQM means the participation of top-management to workers.>
  • They adopted “target management (bench-marking)” for the improving methodology.

TQM and Sho-shudan activity
<Japanese characteristic way>
Key persons: Top management,
Energy manager, Group leader

Energy is used everywhere. Energy is used by everybody. → suitable for TQM Utilization of workers' ability (incentives for workers and top-management) → Sho-shudan

  • TQM and Kaizen by Sho-shudan activity are very popular in Japanese enterprises/factories. ( Sho-shudan activity is generally included in TQM. )

In many cases energy managers play the role of secretaries, advisers, instructors.
