Passenger vehicles contributed 90 % of the total energy consumption in the whole transportation sector increased during FY1991 to 2001.
Passenger vehicles have poor unit energy consumption compared to other transportation.

Factors for the Increase in Energy Consumption for
Passenger Vehicles

Energy consumption for passenger vehicles marked a dramatic 64% increase over 11 years from FY1990.
The trend is mainly attributed to the increase in household ownership of passenger vehicles extending the total driving distance and increased vehicle weights compromising the actual fuel economy.
