Estimated Annual Electricity Cost and Fuel Usage
  • Under the labeling system for retailers, the estimated annual electricity costs and estimated annual amount of fuel used are included on the standardized energy saving labels for the applicable devices.
  • Information on the premises used for calculating the estimated annual electricity costs and estimated annual amount of fuel used are to be made available through pamphlets or posters or explained by staff in the store.
<<Sample premises>>

[Electric refrigerators]
The estimated annual electricity cost is calculated for an electric refrigerator used in average conditions (ambient temperatures of 30°C and 15°C, refrigerated compartment door opened and closed 35 times/day, etc.) and is based on the amount of electricity used annually (kWh/yr) multiplied by 22 (yen/kWh). The actual cost will vary depending on the refrigerator usage in the particular household and the electricity supplier used.

[Gas water heaters]
The estimated annual amount of fuel used is based on a single family of 3 people. The actual amount used will vary depending on factors such as the number of people in the household. The amount is calculated based on a supplied water temperature of 15°C and a heated water temperature of 40°C.

Energy Efficient Product Retailer Assessment System
  • To promote the widespread use of energy efficient products, it is essential to introduce measures aimed at “retailers”, since they form the contact point between manufacturers and consumers.
  • Recognition should be extended to retailers that actively promote energy efficient products or provide appropriate energy conservation information.
  • The Energy Efficient Product Retailer Assessment System was introduced in FY2003.
  • Assessed retailers
  • All retailers of household appliances, etc. for which household appliances make up 50% or more of total sales
  • A number of "Top energy efficient product promotion stores" are selected each year and their rankings publicized. In 2004, awards from the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and from the Minister of the Environment were established.
  • Stores selected as top retailers are authorized to carry a special logo.
