Energy Conservation Education Promotion Model School Program

Support of energy conservation study at elementary and junior high schools.

Energy Conservation Education Promotion Model School Program
Forms of support]

■ Loan of measuring equipment “Energy Conservation Navi” and “Ecowatt”
■ Hosting of energy conservation classes Workshop-style participatory lesson
■ Hosting of seminars for teachers Study seminars for teachers assigned to energy conservation education
■ Grants worth up to 300,000 yen a year on the basis of proposed student study plans.
School can utilize to purchase teaching materials, hire lecturers and the study tours of energy related facilities
■ Assistance in the development of student study plans Consultation and advice by specialists

◆Support for businesses (education and commendation of energy-efficient product retailers)
  • In order to promote energy efficient products, it is essential to introduce measures for retailers, who are the contact point between manufacturers and consumers.
  • Recognition should be extended to retailers who actively promote energy-efficient products or provide appropriate energy conservation information.
  • The energy efficient product retailer assessment system was introduced in FY2003.
  • Hosting of seminars for retailers to supply energy conservation and other information
  • “Retailers that Excel at Promoting Energy-Efficient Products” are selected each year and publicized along with their rankings. Effective FY2004, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award and Minister of Environment Award are awarded to large stores.
  • Selected retailers are authorized to carry a special logo.

◆ Creation of a mechanism for practical efforts
(“eco-family”)
  • Providing a fun way of engaging in practical energy conservation efforts
  • Enhancing motivation. Encouraging ongoing efforts.
  • Energizing practical activities
    • Families that have declared their intentions to abide by an environmentally-friendly lifestyle are registered as eco-families.
    • The leader of each eco-family becomes the "Environment Minister of Our Home", and a certificate of appointment is issued by the Ministry of the Environment.
    • A web-based forum is provided to facilitate information exchange.
Example: Visitors of the web site can propose eco-life ideas or vote on other families’ eco-life ideas at the Eco-life Idea Corner.
