CO2 emission reductions in the land and transportation sector, with the transportation sector accounting for 70% in FY2022
On May 15, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism convened a joint meeting of the Environment Subcommittee of the Social Infrastructure Development Council and the Environment Subcommittee of the Transportation System Subcommittee under the Council for Transport Policy to present the latest status of measures implemented under the Environmental Action Plan. It was reported that CO2 emissions in the land and transportation sector in FY2022 were reduced by approximately 36.43 million tons compared to the base year of FY2013. Of this, the transportation sector—including automobiles, aviation, and railways—accounted for nearly 70%, or approximately 25.43 million tons.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) aims to achieve a reduction of approximately 80.63 million tons of CO2 emissions by FY2030 compared to FY2013, as part of efforts to realize carbon neutrality. It was explained that CO2 reductions are being pursued not only in the transportation sector but also through measures such as energy conservation in buildings, decarbonization in the construction and execution sectors, promotion of renewable energy utilization leveraging infrastructure spaces, and increasing hydroelectric power generation through improved dam operations.
In December 2021, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) formulated the current Environmental Action Plan, outlining specific measures aimed at achieving the government target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 46% in FY2030 compared to FY2013 levels.
