ECCJ held the FY2021 2nd online meeting relating to energy conservation support with Malaysia

Under the instruction and financial support of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, the Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ) has been implementing a bilateral energy conservation cooperation project with Malaysia which continued in FY2021. In the current fiscal year, energy conservation practical training was held in November 2021 and thermal technology training was held in December, both in an online format. The second online meeting of this fiscal year was held together with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR) and other Malaysian institutions on February 22, 2022, during which evaluation was made of the above-mentioned training and discussions were held relating to requests for activities going forward.
1. Meeting attendees:
(1) Malaysian side: Total of six persons, comprising Dr. Ida Syahrina Shukor, Undersecretary, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR/KeTSA) and two other representatives, Mr. Steve Anthony Lojuntin, Director, Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) and one other representative, and Mr. Zulkiflee Umar, Deputy Director, Energy Commission (EC).
(2) Japanese side: Four persons from the ECCJ International Cooperation Division
In the current fiscal year, confirmation and discussions were made of the following items, focusing on the evaluation of the two online trainings that were implemented targeting a total of 36 persons related to the Malaysian government, various associations and universities.
(1) BECMY8 Part 1 Training: Energy conservation practical training was held during the two-day period comprising November 24 and 25, 2021. With regard to the online plant tour of the facilities including the combustion furnace of Nippon Steel Technology Co., Ltd. and steam traps of TLV Co., Ltd., the evaluation showed that it was extremely effective.
(2) BECMY8 Part 2 Training: Thermal technology training was held during the four-day period comprising December 3, 10, 17 and 24, 2021. With regard to the lectures on subjects including energy audit methods for thermal equipment, evaluation was received that the lectures were useful.
(3) Energy efficiency & conservation act formulation situation: The timing of the planned submission of the draft act to the Malaysian parliament has been reviewed, changing from the first quarter of 2022 (January to March) to July 2022.
(4) In Malaysia, COVID-19 infections are continuing to spread, so that the development of the pilot project remains difficult for the time being. However, as requests going forward, it was proposed that a seminar on EC guidelines and a module on energy auditors should be added to the training items.
