Promote energy conservation with AI: ANRE and IEEJ share best practices at seminar

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) of The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI),and The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) held “Digital and AI Energy Conservation Forum” online on March 30.

The forum introduced guidance for companies on improving energy efficiency and productivity, released on April 3, and featured panel discussions based on domestic case studies. Advanced best practices that could help accelerate such initiatives were also shared.

Around 700 people participated in the forum. At the opening of the event, Tatsuya Terazawa, Chairman and CEO of IEEJ pointed out “Not only the energy conservation of AI itself, but also the energy conservation through AI will be considered important” He also emphasized “Additional energy conservation measures  are considered difficult, AI is opening up new possibilities. It could also provide a great opportunity to drive further growth in Japanese industry”

Yoshifumi Fukunaga, Director of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Division at ANRE, explained the background behind the preparation of the guidance and the common features among the case studies.
Nahoko Doi, Managing Director and Chief Researcher of IEEJ, presented overseas case studies on AI applications in the industrial and commercial sectors.
