Energy Conservation Act revised in April to promote rooftop solar installations

The Energy Conservation Act was revised on April 1 to promote the expanded adoption of rooftop solar power systems.

The revision calls on business operators to make efforts to install rooftop solar power systems and to assess the rooftop load capacity and usage conditions.

Specified business operators under the Energy Conservation Act are required to set qualitative targets for the introduction of rooftop solar power systems and include them in their mid- to long-term plans. They are also required to include information such as the installable area in their periodic reports.

In expanding the adoption of solar power generation systems, rooftop installations are regarded as promising due to their relatively low safety risks, such as landslides, and comparatively limited impact on the environment and landscape. ANRE intends to encourage business operators to maximize installations, except on building roofs where installation is difficult due to restrictions under other laws and regulations.

The revision to the Energy Conservation Act, which came into effect on the same day, also added measures concerning the rationalization of energy use at data centers (DCs).
